Response by Stephen Salmore

It is clear that Gov. McGreevey's problems have been a drag on Sen. Kerry's Presidential bid. Most independent voters—the swing voters who determine the outcome of most elections—have an unfavorable opinion of the Governor and are much more likely to favor Bush over Kerry.  However, it could have been worse for the Democrats.  More than half of independents do not believe it was necessary for McGreevey to have resigned.  Voters seem to have been more disappointed than outraged over the Governor's revelations.
